Album Review: Documenta – ‘Drone Pop #1’

Documenta was, “Started as a one one off project but slowly expanded like a bad disorganized universe, Documenta will produce 18 original songs plus a few covers then finish…..
“three chords good, two chords better, one chord best”…”

I had first heard about Joe Greene and his Documenta “Drome Pop”, through the good graces of François Sky. François has a refreshingly, no-nonsense approach to suffering fools gladly, as a rule his barometer is usually right on the money. Joe has proved no exception to this rule.

Around the same time, I encountered the intriguing video for the track ‘Idle Hands‘ – this transformed Documenta from a whisper into a bona fide, must see proposition.

I was then delighted to find that Documenta would be appearing at this year’s Distorted Perspectives Festival in Letterkenny, headlined by San Francisco “repeat-o rockers”, Moon Duo – “placing Donegal in an international context rather than on the periphery”.

Featured Artist – François Sky

François Sky first came to my attention some time last summer courtesy of those fine Helicon chappies. JP “Helicunt” had mentioned he was joining ‘François Sky & Guests‘ at the Reverence Festival Valada – that had warranted further investigation, which brought ever more sweet music to my ears.

“I’m making my music in a very normal life.” So says the humble description on François’ bandcamp page which to date boasts 18 hypnotically addictive digital tracks, all available as free downloads.

The more I listened and the farther down the rabbit-hole I found myself, I realised that a lot of the why I liked this so much, was due to being able to relate to, age-wise specifically, then there was having been on a fairly similar musical listening journey, all rounded off nicely with that holy grail of having a no-nonsense approach to not suffering fools too gladly!

It became pretty clear to me early on that here was a true musicians’ musician, someone who was all about the creative process and perhaps most importantly, who was about doing it his way, with his integrity intact.

The Mushroom Club – ‘EP2’

0000904896_100

The Mushroom Club first emerged in the summer of 2012, sprouting from the germinating spores of Sonic Shroom’s personal vision of psychedelic rock and roll. Quickly joined by Blair Miller, the ensuing debut 4 track ‘EP1‘ was released in November 2012.

Having opened the magical portal, The Mushroom Club then featured on the hypnotic collaborative release ‘Itilyna‘ by François Sky in September 2013.

The Mushroom Club are not to be confused with the 2005 Steven Okazaki documentary of the same name, though their combustive aural assault could legitimately lay claim to Jules Winnfield’s immortal line, “Well, I’m a mushroom-cloud-layin’ motherfucker” from Pulp Fiction…

Various Artists – ‘The Reverb Conspiracy Vol. 3’

“Is everybody in?… Is everybody in?… Is everybody in? The ceremony is about to begin…” *

Act III of The Reverb Conspiracy ceremony is once more upon us, courtesy of Fuzz Club Records‘ co-release with The Reverberation Appreciation Society.

In the words of Fuzz Club’s Casper Dee, “I like to look at The Reverb Conspiracy as a modern Nuggets series. It’s our way of capturing the essence of the underground scene as it is today and documenting it for the history books. There’s so much amazing music coming out now and a huge energy within the scene; we feel like this is an era of rock ‘n’ roll that we’ll all look back on as the start of something big.” (Magnet Magazine 2014).

Track Review

GreenFuzz – ‘This Is An EP’

GreenFuzz

GreenFuzz label themselves as a “Macedonian garage-punk-psychedelic-pop-noise band, formed in 2010”.

What this trio sound like on their debut 3 track released for PMG Recordings, ‘This Is An Ep’, is exactly what it says on label.

What it doesn’t say on the label is how immediately and infectiously hooked you will be with these tracks. Jana’s guitar and vocals are arresting and distinctive, underscored by a driving bass and drums.
