Album Review: The Orange Revival – ‘Futurecent’

tor

Anyone with enough nous, to come up with a transcendental record title as good as ‘Futurecent’, is guaranteed to pique my attention.

The Orange Revival have nous in abundance, as a listen to their sophomore LP will quickly attest.

“Emerging from the depths of Sweden, the band The Orange Revival playing experimental rock n’ roll”, says the band’s webpage by way of humble, understated introduction.

The Orange Revival burst forth with their now long sold out, 2011 debut album ‘Black Smoke Rising’, (I know because I just spent an hour trawling the internet in vain, for a vinyl copy).

They then cemented their reputation with constant touring, a 7″ single ‘Lying In The Sand’, mastered by Sonic Boom whom they met during a tour with his band Spectrum, all topped off with two stops at Austin Psych Fest.

uy

The Underground Youth return with yet another vinyl masterpiece, their latest triumph, in the shape of ‘Haunted’.

Such is the buzz, for those in the know, around The Underground Youth – that the Fuzz Club Records deluxe vinyl edition of 100, sold out immediately on the day the pre-order was announced, one of which plays before me as I write this.

EP Review: TAU – ‘Wirikuta’

tau1

TAU is the collective brainchild of Dubliner, Shaun Mulrooney. Shaun is perhaps best known for his involvement with the Dead Skeletons and as the “Invisible Man” with Camera.

TAU’s ‘Medicine Music’ was envisioned during a Mulrooney sojourn in Mexico with the Wixárikas, an ancient shamanic tribe whose culture and mythology is immersed in peyote lore.

This music was given substance courtesy of Mulrooney’s alliance with multi-instrumentalist, Cristoph “Tiger” Bartlett of Kadaver, whilst holed up in their Berlin studio.

The 4 track EP title ‘Wirikuta’, derives from the Wixárikas’ sacred site, high in the mountains of central Mexico where their mythology believes the world was born, where the sun or Tau made it’s first appearance.

On experiencing ‘It’s time to hear’ for the first time, the warm embrace of it’s sweeping grandeur and haunting imagery had me gladly and willingly sealing my “Faustian Pact” with Sonic Jesus.
